Tell your story in full detail with custom booklet printing.
Start designing by uploading your own PDF, or download our Photoshop or Illustrator template to guide you through the design process. You may also read our instructions below on how to make a booklet or download our PDF guide for key guidelines and specifications to create a successful booklet print.
File Format, Layout & Booklet Cover Guidelines
For a successful print, we recommend following these upload specifications.
- Format: Your file must be in PDF format, with no password protection.
- Layout: Make sure that the file comes in single pages, arranged in correct reading order. Your upload must contain all pages, including four cover pages.
- Blank pages: If you want the inside of the cover pages to be blank, make sure to include blank pages in your PDF file.
Design & Layout Tips for your Booklet
1. COLORS
Booklets are printed in CMYK. Images in RGB or PANTONE colors will automatically be converted.
2. RESOLUTION
300dpi is the required resolution for booklets. Lower resolution files will affect the quality of the final print.
3. BLEEDS
Include a bleed of 1/8” (0.125 in) on every side of every page to avoid white margins. The bleed threshold is ±0.25, anything beyond may keep the file from uploading.
4. MARGINS
Content should be placed at least 1/2” (0.5 in) from the margin. Missing the correct safety margin, your text may be too close to the edge or binding. It can also end up in the bleed, causing it to get cut off.
Custom Booklet Cover Options
Before you upload your design, choose the right cover stock for your booklet from the following options.
Budget matte (9.5pt): 80lb silk coated cover stock. Best for simple and text based designs.
Premium matte (11pt): 100lb silk coated cover stock. Best for bold designs that use subdued colors.
Budget glossy (9.5pt): 80lb glossy cover stock. Best for colorful designs.
Premium glossy (11pt): 100lb glossy cover. Best for photos and brightly colored designs.
Inside pages: All inside pages come in 80lb, 9.5pt silk coated paper.
Frequently Asked Questions
A: Booklets can be printed, packaged and delivered in just 4-6 business days. We offer 2 shipping speed options: Standard (4-6 business days) and Economy (8 business days).
Q: Can I design a custom booklet right on Vistaprint?
A: Right now, you have to create your PDF print file yourself, not on our site. However, we will make sure the file you give us has the right format and page count. Check out our booklet printing guidelines PDF.
Q: Do I have to include content on all four cover pages?
A: No, you’re not required to – you’ll just need to include blank pages in your print-ready PDF. But if you’d like to utilize all the space and add content to all four cover pages, you’re welcome to do that, too.
Q: Do I need to keep page bleed in mind?
A: Yes. You’ll want to include a bleed of 1/8″ on every side of every page in your print file. This prevents white margins or images not reaching the edge of the page. If your file doesn’t include a page bleed, and is uploaded in the trim size, your document may be stretched or cut off. If your file doesn’t fit the product specification (bleeds, safety margins…), you’ll see a message telling you to fix your upload before placing your order.
Q: How many pages does a booklet have?
A: A booklet is composed of 4 cover pages and the inside pages. For instance, an 8-page booklet includes both sides of your front cover and both sides of your back cover. It also has 4 pages inside.Q: Can I get one booklet printed before I order for larger quantities?
A: Yes. We’re able to print a quantity of one custom booklet so that you can check it out.
